Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) has announced the addition of ten accounting, audit, and finance-related occupations on Australia’s Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
This development follows CA ANZ’s findings of shortages across 11 such occupations in June, prompting a joint submission with CPA Australia to have them added to the final CSOL.
At the start of 2024, the organisation surveyed around 450 members, revealing that more than 80% experienced vacancy fill rates below 67% for accountant, auditor, and finance manager roles.
CA ANZ surveyed Australia’s six largest professional services firms in May, and discovered hundreds of vacant positions for external auditors, general accountants, and management accountants.
The occupations recognised on the final CSOL include taxation accountant, accountant (General), management accountant, external auditor, internal auditor, finance manager, financial investment adviser, management consultant, cyber security specialist, and ICT business analyst.
CA ANZ CEO Ainslie van Onselen said: “This change means Australian businesses will be able to access temporary skilled workers for accounting, audit and finance occupations which are currently in shortage across Australia, and unable to be filled domestically.

In November 2024, CA ANZ and CPA Australia expressed concerns regarding the updated guidance for the Payment Times Reporting Scheme (PTRS).
The PTRS aims to improve payment times for small businesses in Australia by requiring large businesses and certain government enterprises to report on their payment terms and practices.
