The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) portal in India experienced technical difficulties, causing a potential delay in the filing of GSTR-1 returns for December 2024.

The original deadline set for these returns was 11 January 2025.

On 10 January, GSTN alerted users via social media that the portal was undergoing maintenance due to technical issues and was expected to be back online by noon.

GSTN wrote in a post on social media platform X that: “GST portal is currently experiencing technical issues and is under maintenance. We expect the portal to be operational by 12:00 noon. CBIC is being sent an incident report to consider extension in filing date. Thank you for your understanding and patience!”

However, taxpayers who later attempted to file their returns were met with a new notification indicating that the portal would remain inaccessible until after 3pm.

This downtime hindered operations, including the filing of GSTR-1 returns, access to historical data, and the ability to respond to official notices.

Form GSTR-1 is a monthly/quarterly statement for registered taxpayers detailing outward supplies of goods and services.

It is required to be filed electronically on the GST Portal by all registered taxable persons, excluding input service distributors, composition taxpayers, and those liable to deduct or collect tax under sections 51 and 52.

Despite the efforts of GSTN to rectify the situation promptly, businesses have expressed concern regarding their ability to meet the imminent filing deadline.

Although the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has not yet released a formal notification, the incident report from GSTN hints at a potential extension of the deadline to 13 January 2025.

The GSTN portal’s technical difficulties have placed strain on taxpayers and businesses, who rely on the system’s functionality to comply with tax regulations.
