The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has joined forces with the UK-ASEAN Business Council (UKABC) to bolster international business and trade efforts in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

This partnership is set to unfold through a series of events aimed at facilitating dialogue and fostering commercial relationships in these regions.

The collaboration’s focus is the annual ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (ABIS), scheduled from 8 to 11 October 2024, in Vientiane, Lao PDR.

UKABC Chair, Lord Vaizey, will oversee four ACCA-sponsored events at the summit.

Lord Vaizey will also contribute insights on ASEAN Digital Transformation, addressing the transformative impact of digital technology on micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

The aim will be to connect these businesses to global markets, streamlining trade processes, and expanding financial inclusion.

UKABC chief executive Ian Gibbons said: “We are very pleased to be working with ACCA on this important series of events. UKABC is delighted to see the strengthening of trading relationships between Southeast Asia and the UK.

“The UK’s accession to CPTPP and bilateral agreements such as the recently signed UK-Thailand Enhanced Trade Partnership are signs of the deepening bilateral trade and investment relationship.”

In Kuala Lumpur, discussions are expected to pivot towards preparing for Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2025.

The ACCA delegation will engage with senior government officials and industry leaders as well as the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation to explore initiatives for the upcoming year.

Further, ACCA is set to sponsor trade and investment-focused roundtables and receptions in Dubai and Bangkok.

These events are occurring between 4 and 15 October 2024.

ACCA Asia Pacific managing director Pulkit Abrol said: “ACCA is delighted to be working with UKABC to promote UK-led business growth. The ACCA Qualification is in demand around the world.

“Our sector has huge potential to grow still further as the world economy evolves. And this potential is underpinned by business resiliency which is reliant on sound accountancy practice.”

This announcement comes closely on the heels of ACCA’s launch of a Professional Diploma in Sustainability.

The new programme is designed for finance professionals aiming to deepen their sustainability knowledge and secure formal accreditation.
