In the digital media age, having a strong presence on
social networking sites has become big business for professional
bodies across the globe. Ana Gyorkos looks at the institutes that
made it into The Accountant’s Top 10 in this exclusive
piece of research
Some of the largest professional accounting
bodies in the world have a strong presence across social media
platforms largely due to their sheer size and brand power.
The American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) is most popular
on Twitter and LinkedIn with 94,506 people, who either follow or
are members of various social media pages.
However, the Association of Chartered
Certified Accountants (ACCA) takes the overall spot for most people
‘liking’ its page on Facebook with a total of 107,293 people liking
the brand across 13 pages.
On Facebook, corporates and individuals create
pages where users can show their
approval by ‘liking’ the brand although the jury is still out on
the value of having a
corporate Facebook presence.
Second running on Facebook is Chartered
Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) with 27,087 likes, which
puts ACCA far ahead of the competition.

By GlobalDataThe ACCA does not make the cut into the top 5
on LinkedIn and is second running on Twitter with 27,856 followers
across eight pages.
While the UK and US institutes top the three
social networks researched, the Institute of Chartered Accountants
India (ICAI) has done well in making the cut on all three
platforms. The ICAI brings together 50,508 people across all three
social media platforms and is second running on LinkedIn with
18,674 members in four groups, third on Facebook with 11,269 likes
and eighth on Twitter with 565 followers.
As the ranking reveals most of the largest
professional bodies have embraced the power of social media and are
interacting with their members. However, there is still a way to go
as social networks offer a unique brand building opportunity
especially to attract the younger generation into the
profession.
