The South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA) has reported an increase in the pass rate for its professional evaluation examination, with 70% of accountants succeeding this year, up from 63% the previous year.

Among the 229 candidates who passed, 136 are female, reported Moneyweb

The top nine students this year have all completed SAIPA’s Project Achiever programme, which is tailored to support candidates in their preparation for the examination.

This programme is a component of SAIPA’s certification process and is designed to evaluate candidates’ knowledge, judgement, and ethical understanding in the field of accountancy.

SAIPA’s professional evaluation assesses theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills.

It provides candidates access to lectures where they dissect case studies to apply their theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios.

The programme provides an opportunity for candidates to clarify any uncertainties with lecturers and includes a mock exam to bolster their confidence ahead of the actual evaluation.

Upon passing the professional evaluation, candidates are awarded the Professional Accountant designation and gain access to SAIPA’s continuing professional development resources.

SAIPA acting chief executive Van der Sandt said: “Initially created to provide previously disadvantaged individuals with greater access to the profession, the programme has evolved into a cornerstone of Saipa’s efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in the accountancy field.”

SAIPA has offered the successful candidates a complimentary 12-month membership to foster their professional growth at the onset of their careers.

Additionally, it has established a partnership with the University of the Western Cape to enhance access, opportunities, and employability for graduates.

This collaboration ensures that students have professional certification at the accounting technician level through practical simulations, preparing them to enter the workforce.

In 2023, SAIPA had placed four executives on precautionary suspension pending the results of a forensic investigation.

The investigation concluded earlier this year, leading to disciplinary hearings against chief executive Shahied Daniels and operations executive Gavin Isaacs.

Both executives remain suspended while the disciplinary process is ongoing.
